THE SHIRE HORSE
The Shire Horse is a British draught horse.
# It is believed to have descended from "The Great War Horse", which was a popular war mount from the Middle Ages.
# The Shire horse is a willing and kind riding mount.
# This breed is usually 17-17.3 hands. The tallest horse is a Shire called Duke who stands at 19.3 hands. The largest Shire was born in 1848, was called Mammoth and was 21.2 hands.
# This breed was bred for a couple of hundred years to pull heavy loads, and it is a 'gentle giant', calm, friendly, with an even temperament.
# The Shire Horse is intelligent, steady, sensitive and eager to please.
# Some small farms have gone back to horse power, as horses are more environmentally sustainable.
