American Quarter Horse

AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE
Some have been clocked at speeds up to 55mph.

#   this breed excels at sprinting short distances. Its name is derived from its ability to outrun other horse breeds in races of a quarter mile or less.
#   Its good-natured disposition and natural cow-sense made the American Quarter Horse a favourite mount among cowboys (during the open- range era of the west).
#   Modern American Quarter Horses are short and stocky, with heavy muscular development, short, wide heads and deep, broad chests. 
#   Their colours are variable but all are solid.
#   The height of mature horses vary from 14.3-16 hands (57-64in / 145-163cm).

Baiji


The Baiji is a 'possibly' extinct species of freshwater dolphin, and is thought to be the first dolphin species driven to extinction due to the impact of humans.
Since Baiji means "White Fin" in Chinese, it means "White-Finned Dolphin."
Gestation would last 10-11 months, delivering one calf at a time. The interbirth interval was 2 years.
Males reached sexual maturity at age 4 /  the female at age 6.
Mature males were about 7ft 7in long / the females 8ft 2in long.
In the wild, the lifespan was 24 years.
Because of its poor vision, the Baiji relied primarily on sonar for navigation. This sonar system plays an important role in socializing and group coordination, expressing emotions.

The Irrawaddy Dolphin



#   These dolphins have a bulging forehead, short beak and 12-19 teeth on each side of both jaws.
#   The Irrawaddy Dolphin is similar to the Beluga in appearance, though most closely related to Killer Whales.
#   Communication is carried out with clicks, creaks and buzzes at a dominant frequency, which is thought to be used for Echolocation.
#   They eat boney fish and fish eggs, cephalopods and crustaceans.
#   The Irrawaddy Dolphin is a slow swimmer, but can swim at speeds of 12-16mph.
#   These dolphins are found in groups of 1-3 animals, though sometimes as many as 25 individuals and have been known to congregate in deep pools.
#   Travelling and staying in groups creates and maintains social bonds.

The Spinner Dolphin


This dolphin is famous for its acrobatic displays in which it spins along its longitudinal axis as it leaps through the air.

Spinner Dolphins love to jump, flip and twist above the surface of the water. This is possibly to communicate.
At night, this dolphin travels to deeper water to eat. On average, an adult dolphin will eat 4-9% of its body weight in fish, squid and shrimps.
Spinner Dolphins can live for 20 years.
 These dolphins live in an open and loose social organization.
Mother and calves form strong social bonds.
Vocalizations of Spinner Dolphins include whistles, burst-pulse signals and Echolocation clicks.
This dolphin has a 10-month gestation period and the mother will nurse her young for one to two years.

The Striped Dolphin


Is a member of the Oceanic dolphin family "Delphinidae."

#   The Striped Dolphin is extremely active and fast and spend a lot of time at the surface. At top speed, up to one third of a pod can be above the surface at any one time and they can leap a distance of 3 times their length.
#   Striped Dolphins are streamlined and colourful. The most recognizable features are the "Stripes."
#   These dolphins are extremely sociable and travel in large groups (sometimes at top speed). They are extremely active at the surface and perform some amazing acrobatics including somersaults, breaching, leaping and upside down porpoising.
#   Fish is a firm favourite of these dolphins and they 'dine out' on the smaller varieties, like lantern-fish which is found in mid or deep water. They also eat squid.
#   Striped Dolphins are widely distributed throughout the world's temperate and tropical oceans. They prefer deeper more offshore waters and can be found in oceanic waters over the continental shelves.
#   The Striped Dolphin is incredibly curious and loves to 'play.'

The Amazon River Dolphin is also known as "The Pink River Dolphin."
#   This dolphin is gray when it is young and slowly turns pink as it gets older. The final colour can be influenced by their behaviour, capillary placement, diet and exposure to sunlight.
#   These dolphins measure up to 9 feet long, are 400 pounds and live up to 30 years old. These dolphins are massive.
#   The Amazon River Dolphin have unusually large brains, which have 40% more brain capacity than a human.
#   This dolphin is more solitary being seen alone or in small pods of 2-4 individuals.
#   These dolphins are incredibly curious and outgoing, and frequently interact with humans.
#   Theses dolphins can swim upside down, possibly to help them see the bottom of the river better.

The Common Bottlenose Dolphin


The Common Bottlenose dolphin is also known as the "Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin."
#   These dolphins are intelligent and charismatic and are the "Stars" of many aquarium shows.
#   Their curved mouths give the appearance of a friendly, permanent SMILE.
#   In the wild, these dolphins are sleek swimmers who can reach speeds of over 18 miles an hour.
#   They inhabit temperate and tropical oceans throughout the world, and are absent from polar waters.
#   The Common Bottlenose Dolphin lives in groups called "Pods" that number 15 dolphins to over 100. These "Pods" include nursery groups, juvenile groups and groups of adult males.
#   Their diet consists of mainly eels, squid, shrimp and a wide variety of fishes. They swallow their food whole and work as a team to 'harvest schools of fish' (although they do hunt individually).
#   Dolphins search for prey primarily using "Echolocation," which is a form of sonar.

Birds of Paradise


The Bird of Paradise has 45 species of small to medium-sized forest birds.

#   The birds are rivalled only by a few pheasants and hummingbirds in colour.
#   Courting couples perform for hours on a chosen perch or in a cleared space on the forest floor.
#   After mating, the plain females generally make the nest and raise the one or two young unaided.
#   The largest Bird of Paradise is 45cm long.
#   Among the most notable of these birds are the "Plume birds" which are 29-46cm long. Their central tail feathers are elongated as wires or twisted narrow ribbons.
#   The 12-wired Bird of Paradise is a short-tailed, 33cm bird with flank plumes elaborated as forward-curving wires.

Swallows


Swallows are small birds with dark, glossy-blue backs, red throats, pale underparts and long tail streamers.

#   There are 84 recognized species of Swallow worldwide.
#   A+Swallows like to nest in open-fronted buildings such as barns, stables and cowsheds.
#   Swallows like to nest close to large domestic animals like cattle or horses.
#   Most British Swallows try to rear 2 broods each summer and some succeed in raising 3.
#   The male swallow arrives back first from migration, singing over his territory in the hope of attracting a mate. Females generally appear a week to a fortnight later.

The Sparrow

Hummingbirds


Hummingbirds are the smallest of birds, most species measuring 7.5 - 13cm in length.

#   The smallest Hummingbird species is the 5cm Bee Hummingbird which weighs less than 2.0g.

#   Parrots usually have a strong, curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs and clawed feet.

#   A Parrot's diet includes seeds, nuts, fruit, buds and other plant material.
#   A few Parrot species eat animals and carrion, while other species eat floral nectar and soft fruits.

White's Seahorse


Also known as the "Sydney Seahorse," this species is thought to live in the southwest Pacific, from Sydney to the Solomon Islands.

#   This species has a narrow head, moderate to high coronet and a long snout. It can reach a length of 13cm.

#   Individuals of this species are generally pale to dark brown or black, although some are entirely yellow.

#   White's Seahorse has a good camouflage.

#   This species is carnivorous and feeds on small crustaceans.

#   Males may brood 100-250 embryos at a time, and after a gestation of 3 weeks, gives birth to about 150 young.

The Lined Seahorse


The Lined Seahorse is 15cm in length and has a lifespan of 1-4 years.

#   This species of seahorse can be found with a myriad of colours, from greys and blacks to reds, greens and oranges.

#   This seahorse lives in the western Atlantic Ocean as far north as Canada and as far south as the Caribbean, Mexico and Venezuela.

#   The Lined Seahorse swims in an erect position and uses its dorsal and pectoral fins for guidance while swimming.

#   This species of seahorse feeds mainly on minute crustaceans and brine shrimp, which they suck through their snout.

#   The Lined Seahorse is monogamous and performs ritual dances every morning to reestablish the bond with its mate.
