THE BELUGA WHALE
The Beluga Whale is an Arctic and sub-Arctic cetacean.
It can live 35-40 years.
An adult can weigh 1,400kg, and can be 4.2m in length.
The female has a gestation period of 14-15 months.
Also known as the "Sea Canaries," Belugas are one of the most vocal of all whales.
Belugas are also called "White Whales," and their unusual 'white' colour makes them one of the most familiar of all whales.
Belugas can mimic a variety of sounds. They are very vocal communicators who use clicks, whistles and clangs.
These whales feed on fish, crustaceans and worms.
They are related to the Tusked "Unicorn" Whale known as the Narwhal.
Their bulbous forehead (called a "melon) is flexible and can change shape.
