The Sun Bear

THE SUN BEAR
The Sun Bear lives in the tropical forests of the Southeast Asia.
It is the smallest of bears, standing nearly 70 cm at the shoulder and weighs 25-65 kgs.
This bear can live up to 25 years in the wild and its size is relative to a 6 ft man.
Also known as the "Malayan Sun Bear", they take their name from the 'bib-shaped' golden or white patch on the chest (which legend says represents the rising sun).
This bear is nocturnal. They lumber through the forest at night, snacking on fruits, berries, roots, small birds, lizards and rodents. They have excellent smell. Their extremely long claws can exceed 4 inches in length, which are used to rip open trees and termite nests. They have a long tongue for extracting honey from bees nests, giving them the nickname "The Honey Bear."

The Brown Bear

THE BROWN BEAR
The Teddy Bear is loved by children and adults and has inspired timeless characters like Winnie the Pooh and Yogi Bear.
The physical and powerful appearance of the Brown Bear makes them instantly recognizable.
The adult Brown Bear can run up to 40 mph, the same 'pace' as a greyhound, and breaks the speed limit on many roads in the UK.
These bears have 2 unique layers, one of short fur and one of long fur. The layer of short fur is designed to keep the warmth in. The layer of long fur prevents water from reaching the layer of short fur and the skin.
Bears are considered to be one of the most intelligent land mammals. When compared to other mammals, they have the largest and most complex brains.

The Polar Bear

THE POLAR BEAR
As it spends most of its life on the sea ice (of the Arctic Ocean), Polar Bears are considered to be marine mammals.
The fur of this particular bear is actually translucent but appears white because it reflects visible light. Underneath the thick fur, the 'skin', is jet black.
These bears can swim for long distances and steadily for many hours and can swim up to 6 mph in the water. The large paws are specially adapted for swimming, which they use to paddle through the water while holding the hind legs flat like a rudder.
Polar Bears main prey is tinged seals and bearded seals, but as hunts are rarely successful, the Polar Bear will scavenge carcasses or settle for small mammals, birds, eggs and even vegetation.
The male bear can weigh up to 800 kg (as much as 10 men!) and are twice the size of the family.

The Giant Panda

The Giant Panda is one of the most easily recognized animals on this Earth.
Their black and white markings are perfect for camouflage (in the wild) and "communication." The face, neck, belly and rump is white so that it can hide in snowy habitats. The arms and legs are black which help it to hide in the shade.
Mother pandas are good examples when it comes to looking after their babies. The mother keeps contact with the cub 100% of the time during the first month. The cub rests on her front and remains covered by mother's paw, arm or head. The 'cubs' (babies) learn to climb at 5 months old, practicing by climbing over mother.
The Giant Panda can spend 10-16 hours a day feeding on bamboo (sounds like humans eating!)

The Narwhal

THE NARWHAL
The Narwhal has a large "tusk" from a protruding canine tooth.

The adult can be 5.1m in length and weigh 940kg.
They travel in groups of 15-20, although reports of hundreds have been spotted together.

They are known as the "Unicorns of the Sea."

There are (roughly) 80,000 Narwhals in the world.
The female has a gestation period of 16 months.
The spiraled "tusk" can grow as long as 10 feet.

They live in the Arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia.
They feed on Greenland halibut, Arctic and polar cod, squid and shrimp.
Narwhals can dive about a mile deep in the ocean.

Narwhals can live 105-125 years.

The Bowhead Whale

THE BOWHEAD WHALE
The Bowhead Whale is the only baleen whale endemic to the Arctic and sub-Arctic waters.

This is an endangered species and there are 8,000-12,000 world-wide.
The Bowhead Whale are considered to be the longest-living mammals, living for over 200 years.

The Arctic species is associated with ice floes. Its movement patterns are influenced by the melting and freezing of the ice. They are capable of breaking through sea ice.

This species of whale can grow up to 60 feet long and are able to leap entirely out of the water.
Their weight can be 91,000kg.

The female will have a calf every 3-4 years. The calf will stay with its mother for about a year, drinking plenty of milk while their 'baleen' develops.

The Bowhead Whale will feed on krill and copepods and fish. They are 'filter-feeders.'
